Two internationally prominent companies have been selected by Gov. Bill Richardson’s administration to develop a unified advertising and marketing campaign for New Mexico.

About $3 million was allocated by the Legislature for the state campaign in the current budget year.

Winning a one-year contract with the state were Edelman Public Relations Worldwide, which describes itself as the world’s largest independent public-relations firm, and M&C Saatchi, a London-headquartered advertising agency with clients including British Airways and drug maker GlaxoSmithKline .

In addition, the administration has created a new position in state government to oversee the marketing and advertising campaign that will develop a “brand” for New Mexico to use in promoting the state and attracting tourists and businesses.

Johnny Montoya of Stanley was hired for the $75,000-a-year job as state director of marketing and advertising. Montoya is the husband of Rep. Rhonda King, D-Stanley .

“For the first time, the state will focus and coordinate advertising and marketing resources to maximize impact and increase results in economic development, tourism and all of our economic sectors,” Richardson said in a statement.

Montoya’s position is in the Tourism Department, but he will report to the governor’s office, said Pahl Shipley, a spokesman for Richardson.
